Welcome, citizen of Utopia. What's that? You say you do not live in Utopia? I say, you are wrong. Since you are reading this, you are on Earth - or close enough to pick up a radio signal. You are most likely American, Australian or in English speaking Europe. Around you are people who by and large do not have to wonder if they will soon be ravaged by hordes of barbarians, where their next meal will come from or when the next ravenous animal will attempt to take their life. Diseases do not run rampant, order trumps chaos and look at all those shiny cars and video game systems and cellular telephones. Just consider the vast quantities of antidepressant drugs, legal and illicit, the armies of counsellors, petty criminals jailed for stealing what they could easily earn or find for free, the beaten spouses and those who hammer the fist.
Things are perfectly swell. So why are we so unhappy? At what cost has come all this development, and who has paid it?
I want you, adventurous reader, prisoner in paradise, to ask yourself a question: What would you do with everything you need? If you no longer had to labor at your job afford your home, your food, education, health care and all your tidy, shiny things, what would you do? If all these things were provided as mana from the heavens, what would you do?
If your answer is that you would stop working, you are not only a slave to economic governance, but a short sighted one to boot. Of course you would no longer be serving ungrateful customers or trapping yourself before a glowing rectangle in a dull cube or creating knowledge no one will ever care to contemplate. But what would you do?
Would you study? Would you advance society? Would you do nothing at all? I think the majority of people would do something good for society. I know I would. Of course, what is good for society is quite subjective - and those who control the money want to make sure that the only subject you concern yourself with is you. And you are a subject in every sense of the word.
We live in a world that could be fed, clothed, housed and given full medical care right now. Every day America alone throws out massive amounts of food. More than 40% of what is produced - tossed. By some estimates that's about one pound, per day, per American, of edible food. By one government estimate that's 30 million tons of food every year. Do you spend money on food? I do, and now I wonder why.
This blog will be asking very simple What If questions designed to, hopefully, spark a simple thought. This post's thought? What if there were no money, and everyone had what they needed. What if that paper in your pocket were just paper, the card just plastic, and if you wished for quiche all you had to do was ask, and the starving people all over the world all had that same ability.
